Which of the Canary Islands is best for a romantic getaway?

When considering the Canary Islands as their next holiday destination, couples are spoilt for choice with where exactly to take their custom. With so many different options offering a wide range of experiences, it can be difficult to know just where to start your search for your dream escape to the Canary Islands.

Whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, or just escaping from everyday life, this enchanting part of the world can provide you with all the ingredients you need for an unforgettable couples getaway.

Any number of the islands could stake a worthy claim as being the most romantic spot of all. However, we’ve narrowed it down to the three best destinations that you should be considering for a memorable retreat for you and your loved one.

Tenerife

Famed most for its energetic nightlife scene, Tenerife may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of a romantic escape in the Canary Islands. However, after exploring the local ‘discotecas’, there are plenty of romantic sights to take in on this, the largest of the Canary Islands.

This particular corner of Europe is well known for being one of the best areas for stargazing anywhere across the continent. If you find yourself with a night spare in Tenerife, head down to Teide National Park in the very heart of the island. The park centres around Teide Volcano, which towers over the surrounding cosmic-like landscape, characterised by endless craters and petrified lava flows. At night, the galactic feel on the ground is mirrored by the sky above, as on a clear night you can see 83 of the 88 recognised constellations.

La Gomera

One of the smallest of all the Canary Islands, La Gomera is often overlooked by holidaymakers, overshadowed by its bigger and more developed neighbours. In 2019, Tenerife received over 100x more visitors than La Gomera, but when it comes to couples escapes, this small island could be the perfect secret retreat you’ve been looking for.

One of the most romantic, yet stomach-turning spots on La Gomera is the Abrante viewpoint, situated in the north of the island. Step out onto the seven-metre long glass platform, as you look out onto the vast Atlantic Ocean, suspended over 600m above sea level – hold on tight to your partner!

There are plenty more photogenic spots where you can create long-lasting memories with your loved one. La Gomera is also home to one of the Canary Islands’ four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with Garajonay National Park boasting breathtaking vistas across the island. One of the best views within the park can be found at Alto de Garajonay – the highest point on the island, at almost 1,500m above sea level.

El Hierro

Whilst there are very few beaches to speak of on this, the area’s youngest island, there are plenty of magical destinations to discover across this little Canarian jewel. El Hierro is famed for its natural pools, formed across thousands of years of erosion.

The most popular and notable pool is Charco Azul, which is sheltered away from the Atlantic tides giving you ultimate privacy and tranquility. Coined the ‘Blue Pool’ due to the vivid turquoise colouring of the water, this little taste of paradise remains one of the most natural pools in the Canary Islands, with the lack of tourism limiting the human influence on the landscape.

For the slightly more adventurous couple, consider visiting one of El Hierro’s renowned dive spots. Regardless of your experience levels, local guides will ensure you get an unforgettable experience in the beautiful Atlantic waters, where the wealth of marine life attracts divers from all over the world. Due to its secluded location and lack of tourist activity, you can expect a typical visibility of around 30m. Furthermore, the flora and fauna that live here are largely undisturbed, meaning their beauty has been very well preserved.
